Methods for Removing Mold from Clothes

If you have moldy clothes that are light or colorless, using bleach can be an effective solution. Soak the clothes in a mixture of bleach and water for a few hours, following the instructions on the label. After soaking, hand wash the clothes as usual. Another option is to pour bleach directly into the washing machine. Always remember to wear rubber gloves when working with bleach to protect your hands.

Remove long-term mold stains on clothes

Using White Vinegar

A combination of white vinegar and laundry detergent can also effectively remove mold from clothes. Mix one glass of white vinegar with water in a 2:1 ratio and soak the clothes in this mixture for at least an hour. Then, wash the soaked clothes again with regular detergent to enhance the cleaning effect.

Borax, available in powder form or as a solution, is a natural mold remover. If using the powder form, mix it with water according to the instructions and pour the solution directly into the washing machine. Wash the clothes as usual.

Using Baking Soda

Place a glass of baking soda in the washing machine along with the clothes and select the longest washing cycle and highest temperature possible. Repeat this method a few times, if necessary, until the odor is gone. Baking soda can be purchased from bakeries.

When clothes are starting to develop mold, wash them promptly and dry them in the sun. The sun will eliminate fungal spores and eliminate musty odors. If the weather is wet, use other drying methods and then dry the clothes in the sun as soon as possible.

However, prevention is better than cure. Keep the following tips in mind to keep your clothes fresh, clean, and mold-free:

  • Remove clothes from the washing machine as soon as the cycle is complete.

  • Always check the washing instructions to ensure clothes can be dried.
  • Do not leave sweaty clothes or wet swimwear in one place for too long. Dry them on a rack before placing them in the dirty laundry bin.

Take clothes out of the washing machine immediately after washing and dry them in the sun to keep them smelling fresh and clean.
